Alexei Navalny’s funeral took place on March 1, in Moscow. Thousands of people came to pay him their respects, despite hundreds of police officers who were deployed to the area. The lines to the church where the memorial service for Navalny was held and to the cemetery where he was buried stretched for miles. Mediazona followed those who mourned Alexei Navalny. Our film tries to capture their thoughts, moods, and dialogues.
Alexei Navalny, who was killed in a penal colony in Russia’s Far North, was buried in Moscow on Friday, March 1. Thousands of people came to pay their last respects to the Church of the Icon of Our Lady Soothe My Sorrows and the Borisovskoye cemetery.
The church service only took 20 minutes, and only relatives and several more people were let inside. The rest made their way to the cemetery, chanting “Freedom to political prisoners,” “No to war,” “Navalny is Russia’s hero.” The working hours of the cemetery were extended late into the evening, but many people still couldn’t get in and left flowers at the fence.
Over the weekend, thousands more came. Alexei Navalny’s grave is completely covered with flowers. And people keep coming today, on the fourth day since the funeral.
